Description

The M500 Motor is essentially the T500 Thruster, but designed for a wider range of applications. Without a propeller or nozzle, it’s a flexible building block for things like vehicle propulsion for uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) and uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs), subsea tooling, gear-trains, actuators, or whatever else you can imagine.

It’s carefully designed to be more rugged, more powerful, and more efficient than the M200 Motor.

Design and Details

Like our thrusters, the M500 is a three-phase brushless motor leveraging our patented flooded design. Water flows throughout the components, so it’s water-cooled, water-lubricated, and inherently pressure tolerant.

The stator is fully encapsulated and electrically isolated from the water. The rotor features rugged construction with high-performance N52 neodymium magnets protected by a stainless steel abrasion shield, preventing damage from debris or sand. High-performance water-lubricated plastic bearings keep things running smoothly, and the body is made from impact-resistant glass-filled polycarbonate.

The M500 base includes four M4 mounting holes, making it easy to attach to frames, hulls, or just about anything you can imagine.
It comes with a 1.5 m cable with a pre-installed WetLink Penetrator for easy connection to a watertight enclosure or other housing.

Getting Started

The M500 requires an electronic speed controller (ESC) for operation. We recommend the Basic ESC 500, designed for the high-power requirements of the M500 at 24V. The Basic ESC can also be used in lower-power applications, as long as current does not exceed its 30A maximum.

You’ll also need a power source like our lithium-ion batteries and a signal source such as the Thruster Commander, an RC radio receiver, a flight controller like the Navigator, or a microcontroller like an Arduino or Raspberry Pi.

Check out the technical details section for full motor specifications and our motor user guide to help get started with operation.

¹ Design life was used to define accelerated test conditions and does not represent a warranty period.
² Electrical values are typical; actual units may vary within +/-5%. Measured using the Basic ESC 500.
³ The M500 Thruster has a maximum operating voltage of 24 V, equivalent to a fully charged 6S LiPo or Li-ion battery. Continuous full-throttle operation at 24 V should be limited to 1 minute or less to avoid overheating.
